Seth tried to focus on what Silvia Reynolds was saying. If this wasn’t a date, he’d actually enjoy talking to her about the rescue missions she’d had a hand in building. She seemed to have a real heart for preserving wildlife and untouched lands.

In his ear, his coach hissed, “Don’t forget to ask her if she wants you to order before you bullishly treat her like a child. She’s much too old to be treated like that.”

What was Noel’s deal? Sure, Silvia was a few years older but so what? She was refined and classy. He did a bit of research, too, before agreeing to this date. She’d sent him a message saying that they had a lot in common and should meet. She’d also told him that he’d not regret it.

Silvia was the only one to have made such a promise and since he’d regretted all the past dates with women his age or younger, he decided to give it a shot and see what happened.

Noella sounded like a cat that had its tail stepped on when she said, “You’re slouching, Kelly.”

He quickly straightened and whispered, “You said to lean in closer.”

“Excuse me, hun?” Silvia asked, handing the waiter her menu. Blast. He’d hoped that she was too busy talking to their waiter to hear his remark.

“Would you like to pick a wine to go with our meal?” he asked, trying to cover his blunder.

“Oh. Sure.” Silvia rattled off a brand and the waiter said he’d bring it right out. She smiled at him again and patted his hand that was resting on the table beside his plate. “Though I like a man who doesn’t monopolize the conversation, I’m quite interested in your work. Do you mind telling me what type of animals you’re working with and what your end goal is?”

“I don’t mind at all.” The fact that she actually wanted to hear about his work made him warm up to her even more. There were no sparks, but he wasn’t feeling all fidgety like he did on all the other dates. “Kelly Rescue Farm is my life, really. It means so much to me, I can’t…Well, we are working with abused horses, trying to help them over their fears. The hope is to eventually train some of them to be therapy horses for children with autism and other disabilities. I’ve also begun working with trainers and owners whose animals appear in film and television. You’d be surprised at how many are mistreated or cast aside after they’re no longer useful.”

“Not surprised at all, Mr. Kelly.”

“Call me Seth. There’s no need to be formal.”

Silvia smiled sweetly. “Then you’ll need to make sure you call me by my first name. What project do you have going on right now?”

He started talking about Noella’s Danes, trying to be careful to not say anything that might upset her more. She’d grown so quiet, his gaze darted in her direction a couple of times. Was Mary holding up a mirror aimed at
